Invest in your hair, it is the crown you never take off!

There are literally so many blog posts I could sit and write about hair! From the importance of investing in a good hairdresser (especially if you colour your hair), to how to achieve that effortless bun hairstyle... you know, the one that the supermodels on Instagram seem to get right with one swooped action, and yet the most of us look like we've got a birds nest stuck rather unneatly on top of our heads!
But today I've decided to write about my favourite all time hairstyle - loose curls!
Now, I've always had relatively long, thick hair - other than that one time I got it cut into a bob because I wanted to look like Jessica Simpson....yes, let's not relive that!
So, finding a way to curl my hair without the curls dropping out almost instantly is something I've had to trial and error over the years.
For a long time I was curling my hair using heated rollers - which did a fairly good job at curling my hair, but at the same time made it look rather unruly (mainly from the back). Even if you become an expert at putting them in - (which I used to be able to do with ninja speed!) You could still never get that really smooth finish.
That's when I decided to move on to a curling wand. At first I was using the Bombay 5 in 1 curling wand before finally moving on to the Cloud Nine wand. I actually have both the curling and waving wand. The curling wand achieves those tighter curls and the waving wand creates those loose, romantic curls. Both come in individually at £109.00 which may feel like a costly purchase, but honestly they are such a worth while investment.
I've had mine now for 2 years and never had any problems with them - they heat up very quickly and have a smooth barrel so your hair never feels like it's getting stuck to the iron.
Before I curl my hair I make sure to always spray some heat protective spray. My favourite one is the Revlon Uniq One. This is a 10 in 1 spray and smells delicious! I won't go into all the benefits of this spray but will highlight that it does protect against heat and also leaves you hair feeling so silky smooth. I have bleach highlights and I still often get people remarking how soft it is to touch - I honestly feel a good hair dresser, and good hair products are so key to the condition and overall health of your hair.
There are many ways to curl hair with a curling wand - I must have watched at least a hundred YouTube tutorials over time...and isn't it funny how they are often of women that have the most luxurious, volumised natural bouncy hair?! I come away every time thinking I will end up looking exactly the same as them...but it doesn't quite work out that way hehe! Having said that, I have perfected the curling art over the years, and I'm very happy with the end look I achieve in about a 10min time frame.
Some key pointers to offer you are;
- Make sure your hair is completely dry (if you start applying a hot heat to it damp don't be surprised if you start to see steam coming off your hair!)
- Section your hair. I start with the bottom layer of hair and bung the rest up on top of my head. Section the bottom layer into two parts and start taking sections (about 2 inches each time) and wrap the hair around the wand. I mix up wrapping the hair both in a forwards and backward motion with each section.
- Leave for about 10seconds on the wand and when you release the hair keep it curled in your hand whilst it cools down and then release.
- Once the bottom layer is down take some hair spray and lightly spray the curls.
- Next take the middle section of your hair and repeat all the same steps. Ensuring you hold the hair around the wand for 10seconds at at time and hair spraying before you move onto the top section. Just remember not to hair spray before you use the curling wand on the hair!
- Once you have repeated all the same steps for the top section I finish off by getting my GHD straighteners and straightening just the top sections of hair from the root down about 2 inches. It just helps get a smooth finish on top and doesn't leave you with curls too close to your scalp.
- Lastly, brush your curls gently with an all natural bristle brush to build in some volume. If you want, you can then add some hair oil to just smooth and separate the curls slightly. I currently use Pantene Repair and Protect Dry Oil with Vitamin E.
And then voila! You have a whole head of curls and after lots of practice, you will be surprised how quickly you can achieve the look.
I might be tempted to even do a YouTube tutorial of my own to showcase this method - and trust me when I say I don't have the model perfect hair, so hoping that if I did a tutorial it will be more relatable!
I'm also tempted to purchase and try out the Dyson Air Wrap so if I do, I will be sure to report back on here if it is any good. And just remember - life doesn't have to be perfect, but your hair can be!
